This is too weird: A bird reportedly has dropped a "bit of baguette" onto the world's largest atom smasher, causing the machine to short out for a period of time.
It's just the latest mishap for the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, which scientists plan to use to get insight into the universe's origins. The LHC, which has a 17-mile track to circulate protons and is located underground on the French-Swiss border outside Geneva, Switzerland, is the largest particle accelerator in the world and cost about $10 billion.
The LHC booted up in September 2008, but technical problems forced it to shut down shortly after its launch. When the mystery bird reportedly dropped a piece of bread onto the particle accelerator's outdoor machinery earlier this week, the device was not turned on, according to reports, and therefore did not suffer major damage.
Had the machine been activated, the baguette incident could have caused the LHC... ...Read Full Article HERE

Prelude: DHS = Department of Homeland Security (United States)
Quote
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Department of Homeland Security will hire up to 1,000 cybersecurity experts over the next three years to help protect U.S. computer networks, an Obama administration official said.
"Cybersecurity is one of our most urgent priorities," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in making the announcement Thursday.
She unveiled the plans at an event marking the beginning of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
"This new hiring authority will enable DHS to recruit the best cyberanalysts, developers and engineers in the world to serve their country by leading the nation's defenses against cyberthreats," according to Napolitano.
U.S. officials are mindful that both government and private sector computer sites have been targeted, and consequences can be dire. The Internet, Napolitano said, is "a critical... ...Read Full Article HERE
Regardless of which side you're on (though as a true computing enthusiast, you shouldn't be taking sides), you've heard the arguments back and forth on the which operating system is truly safer – Mac OS X or Windows.
It is of the opinion of Charlie Miller, a well known Mac security guru, that even Snow Leopard, the latest version of Mac OS X, isn't as safe as Windows.
One key point is that Snow Leopard still doesn't have ASLR, or address space layout randomization, which randomly arranges the position of key data making it harder for hackers to target for exploits.
Miller said to TechWorld that Apple didn't change the ASLR from 10.5 to 10.6: "Apple didn't change anything. It's the exact same ASLR as in Leopard, which means it's not... ...Read Full Article HERE

What is testmy.net
testmy.net is an internet connection benchmark. We offer Download and Upload connection speed
tests.
We offer connection history logging as well as host stats. This is a 100% free site and you can test as much
as you need to. testmy.net is able to bring you some of the most accurate results due to our centrally
located US server on the UUnet / Global Crossing backbone.
Unlike some speed testing sites, testmy.net uses only highly compressed data for
testing to ensure that you are testing from data that your provider has no way
of compressing (therefore this site will show you what your real line speed is,
not what your provider wants you to think... common among satellite providers). Also, with 'SmarTest'
Testmy.net will automatically adjust for your line speed and use the most
optimal test size for your connection type. testmy.net is a 100%
